Welcome to "The Story Door"
The First of Many "Cabinware Doors"
Brought to you by Alan Davenport
of Al's Cabin BBS!
(717) 686-3037 9600 HST
"The Story Door Utility Program"
This program is for maintenance of Stories and Users of "The Story Door". It
allows you great control of what goes on in the door. Features are described
below;
"Import a Text File"
This option will allow you to import ASCII text files INTO any story. Almost
any text file can be read in and can either be appended onto the end of a
story or you can start a new story to import the text file into. The only
limitation is that the maximum line length of any line in the file to be
imported cannot exceed 72 characters. This is because the stories are stored
in direct access files fielded to 72 characters. This allows the users to
start and end at any point in the stories and for The Story Door to remember
which line was the last one the user had read. If you try to import a file
with lines longer then 72 characters you will be warned and given a chance to
abort, dump the long lines into a file called "TOO_LONG.DMP", or to read it
in anyhow (Truncating the long lines to 72 characters.) The reason for the
"TOO_LONG.DMP" file is to show you which lines are a problem so you can
perhaps edit the file with a text editor.
"Export a Story to a Text File"
This is the opposite of the import function above. This allows you to convert
a story to a straight text file. A major reason for the Import/Export
functions is story maintenance. Say you have a very good story going, then
someome spoils it. You can then EXPORT it to a text file, use your favorite
word processor to edit it, then IMPORT it back into the format of the stories
in The Story Door. When you export a story, you have the option to STRIP out
the hidden credits lines (to save disk space) or to export them along with
the story to the output file.
"Lock Out/ Un-Lock Out Users for The Story Door"
This function is fairly straight forward. If you have a user that is giving
you a problem, you can use this option to lock them out of the door. If a
locked out user attempts to use The Story Door, it will refuse the let them
in and return them to your BBS. To lock out a user, just enter part or all of
their name at the prompt. You Dont have to type their whole name. So, if
"William Mastermostenburg" giving you problems, entering "Master" at the
prompt will be enough to match this name. This function is dual purpose. If
you decide to let a locked-out user back into the door, just enter the name
of the person at the prompt exactly as you would to lock someone out.
"Password Maintenance"
Any of the stories can be password protected. If a user has high enough
access when they create a story, they have the option to password protect the
story. Or not, if they so desire. The reason for password protected stories
are many. You could have an adult discussion story, a limited access story
that a group of friends are writing that they do not want to general users to
access, etc. This option allows you to add passwords to a story, delete
password from a story (making it an "open" story) or to simply CHANGE the
password to a story. (Say, some children someohow got the password to your
Adult Discussion.)
"Read a Story"
Just as it says. It allows you to read without loading the door in the "local"
mode.
-=*=-
Please note, SD-UTIL.EXE is NOT meant to run over the modem! It is designed
for local only use.
"Distribution of The Story Door"
Your are encouraged to upload this door program to as many BBS's as you
please.
"Support and Contributions for The Story Door"
To obtain help setting up The Story Door, give comments or suggestions, or
whatever you may call my BBS at 717-686-3037 at any baud rate up to 9600-HST.
Alternately, you may send a netmail message to "ALAN DAVENPORT" at fidonet
address 1:107/860. Any question with a REASONALBLE amount of description of
the problem you are having will be answered. (An UN-reasonable message would
say something like 'I can't get it to work, what's wrong?' I DO get messages
like that from time to time. How on EARTH could I respond to that?!)
If you and your users enjoy The Story Door you are encouraged to send a gift
of any amount ($10 recommended) to;
Alan Davenport
RD 3 Box 3106
Milford, Pa. 18337
Contributers will get preferential treatment for help and, if logged onto my
BBS, will get increased time/download limits and will be given access to my
"Cabinware" message area where discussion of ALL doors I have written takes
place. Your increased access will be PERMENANT and not a subscription period.
It will expire ONLY after you have been off my system for over 60 days, when
you will be purged from inactivity. (So, if you are a regular caller, your
increased access will NEVER expire!)
Please DO consider a gift, even if you do NOT call my system. I almost had to
write a complete BBS from scratch to get the menus and message entry/edit
section working! An occational gift will let me know all my hard work is
appreciated and will encourage me to write even MORE doors for you and your
users' enjoyment!
Take care now,
Alan Davenport
